Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has been used in cooking and natural medicine for thousands of years in China, Japan and India. Modern use of ginger focuses primarily on the anti-emetic effect of ginger, ie against nausea. It can be helpful in early pregnancy, for patients on chemotherapy and to prevent motion sickness.

Ginger also has a positive effect on digestion as it promotes peristalsis and protects the mucous membrane of the stomach.

Ginger has traditionally been recommended for symptoms related to the menstrual cycle because it is an anti-convulsant and anti-inflammatory. Women who suffer from menstrual pain and cramps can benefit greatly from ginger.

For example, it may relieve indigestion and diarrhea that some women may experience in connection with their period, especially endometriosis sufferers.

A study published in 2014 [1] showed that 250mg of dried ginger three times a day (for a total of 4 days per cycle) dramatically reduced severe bleeding in young women. The biggest difference was noted during the second month. Ginger was used by the test group for three cycles in a row.

Prostaglandins are hormone-like substances that are involved in multiple processes, such as inflammation, blood clotting and smooth muscle contraction. During menstruation, prostaglandins are excreted in order for the uterus to contract and shed the endometrial lining. Women who form more of the pro-inflammatory prostaglandins PGE2 and PGF2 alpha often bleed more than normal (menorrhagia).

Ginger has an anti-inflammatory effect that resembles ibuprofen and other NSAIDs that are commonly used to treat menstrual and severe bleeding. Ginger also blocks the formation of prostaglandins enzymatically, which can give an analgesic effect and reduce bleeding.

Gingerols are anti-inflammatory compounds present in ginger and these may improve joint conditions.
