Everything you’re wondering about progesterone cream (and then some)
Why does ovulation matter if you don't want to get pregnant?
Because ovulation is the process through which your body produces androgens, estrogens, and progesterone. These are the hormones that help you feel well, steady, and like yourself.
But it is not only about the hormones themselves. It is also about how they communicate with your brain in order for ovulation to happen. Ovulation is the central event of the menstrual cycle. Your period is simply what happens when ovulation did not lead to pregnancy.
Your body has a built-in threat response system — what we usually call “stress.” But stress can mean many things. One example is an ovulation process that gets stuck or disrupted.
When your body registers stress, it can affect how you feel and how you behave. And when ovulation does not run as it should, you may experience symptoms such as anxiety, mood swings, poor sleep, brain fog, irritability, or a feeling that you are not quite yourself. Over time, that can affect relationships, work, and the parts of life that shape your quality of life.
Several things can disrupt ovulation. Aging is one example, and eventually it happens to everyone because the number of eggs does decline over time. That transition is perimenopause. High blood sugar is another example — but unlike aging, it is something you can influence.
When progesterone cream is used in the right way, it can act almost like a lubricant for the menstrual cycle, strengthening the signals needed for ovulation to complete. This may help reduce PMS symptoms and make the transition into and through perimenopause smoother — until ovulation eventually stops altogether.
Do I need to test my progesterone levels first?
Not at all. Testing (whether saliva, urine, or blood) won't give you any actionable information. Here's why: progesterone is produced as a result of ovulation. If levels are low, it simply means you didn't ovulate in that particular cycle—which has already passed and can't be changed.
Every cycle is unique, and you can only influence your next cycle with progesterone support. You already have the data you need: your age, whether your cycles are regular or irregular, and any cycle related symptoms you're experiencing. That's enough information to give progesterone cream a try.
How & where do I apply it?
Apply the cream to the inside of your forearms using the palms of your hands.
This formula absorbs best through the palms of your hands and fingertips, where sweat glands help the small progesterone molecules pass through the skin efficiently. Other areas with many sweat glands include the soles of the feet, face, groin, and perineum.
Avoid areas with more subcutaneous fat, such as the thighs, belly, and buttocks, as this may lead to less predictable absorption. There is no need to rotate application areas.
The Application Plan:
Prep: Rinse your hands and forearms with warm water. Use soap if you have any products on your skin to ensure nothing blocks absorption.
Apply: For small amounts, rub into the center of one palm. For larger amounts, massage into your inner forearms using your palms and fingertips until absorbed.
Safety First: Keep treated skin away from children and pets. Don’t pet animals or let them lick treated areas before you have washed your hands. Avoid sunbathing on treated skin. Wash first or cover with clothing.
Finish: Wait 15–30 minutes for full absorption. After that, you can wash your hands without losing effectiveness.
When do I apply it?
Timing is everything. If you are still cycling, when you apply the cream matters just as much as how much you use. Because progesterone needs to work with your natural rhythm, you shouldn’t use it every day. We recommend tracking your cycle with a diary or a cycle tracking app so you know exactly when to start and stop to get the best results. Don't worry about the specifics yet—you'll receive a detailed digital user guide with your order to walk you through it.
Why do I apply it?
It helps to think of progesterone cream as a tool, not a daily supplement like a vitamin. Unlike a vitamin, where you're simply trying to top up "levels," progesterone cream works by supporting the ovulation process and the complex hormonal communication that drives your cycle. It's less about reaching a specific number on a lab test and more about giving your body the right signal at the right time.
What if I don't have a cycle anymore?
It can still be incredibly useful. In perimenopause, you may stop ovulating, but the "hormonal crosstalk"—the body's constant, noisy attempt to trigger ovulation—never stops. This internal noise is what causes those frustrating symptoms. A small amount of progesterone acts as a calming influence, helping to quiet that crosstalk.
In postmenopause, things have usually settled, but you might need prescription MHT (with estrogen) if you have symptoms and to protect your bone health. Progesterone cream remains a great complement here, but remember: it is a support tool, not a replacement for the progestin prescribed in your MHT.
How long does a bottle last?
Since you only need a small amount of Matriarch 20 to support your balance, a single bottle typically lasts 2–4 months, depending on your specific needs. It's a long-term investment designed to stay with you through several cycles.
Concentration: 2% ultra-micronized progesterone.
Volume: 50ml bottle (approx. 100 full pumps).
Per Pump: One full pump delivers 10mg of progesterone; half a pump delivers 5mg.
Note: These values are approximate. Small variations in volume can occur due to manufacturing or air bubbles during transport.
Pro-tip: Checking your product level
The label on the bottle is designed with a small gap so you can easily see how much cream you have left. When checking from the bottom, keep in mind that the first 1¼ inches (3cm) do not contain cream. This space houses the bottle base and the air-filled pump mechanism, including the piston that pushes the cream upward as you use it.
Is Matriarch cruelty free?
Absolutely. No animal testing, no animal ingredients.

Keep in mind
For external use only. Keep out of reach of children. If the cream produces a rash or itching, wash the skin with mild soap and discontinue use. Avoid transferring the cream to children or pets. Wash your hands after application, and if necessary, cover the treated area with clothing. Do not sun bathe with treated skin. Cover the area with clothing or wash the treated skin before sun bathing. After 15-30 minutes when the cream is fully absorbed, washing your hands won't reduce effectiveness.
Storage & Best By
The expiry date is printed on the bottom of the bottle. Once opened, use within 12 months.
The cream can withstand freezing, as long as the texture is not grainy after thawing.
Store in a cool place, out of direct sunlight. Bottles can be refrigerated for long-term storage. However, do not apply the cream while cold, as it may not absorb as well. Let it come to room temperature before use.
Packaging & Recycling
Bottle, pump, and lid are made of HDPE plastic and contain no metal parts.
Recycle the empty bottle and lid as plastic.
If there’s any cream left, pump it out and throw it in household waste.
Do not compost, pour down the sink or drain, or flush it down the toilet.
Benefits of airless packaging:
The advantage of this bottle design is longer shelf life without unnecessary preservatives, since no air reaches the cream. You'll also get nearly every drop of product because the bottom plate pushes the cream up until it's completely empty—nothing gets stuck on the bottle walls.

Ultra-micronized
Particle size matters with progesterone cream. Larger particles absorb poorly and inconsistently, which can reduce effectiveness and potentially cause skin irritation.
Matriarch Balance Creams are formulated with ultra-micronized progesterone featuring exceptionally fine particles for maximum absorption, using yam-derived raw material rather than soy.
