Taurine is an amino acid that's essential for heart and eye function and has a calming effect on the nervous system. It can be particularly helpful for perimenopause issues such as night sweats and sudden awakening with heart palpitations.
Key Benefits:
- Helps maintain healthy heart rhythm
- Essential for heart muscle function
- Regulates excessive levels of noradrenaline and glutamate
- Promotes optimal GABA levels
- Supports healthy cholesterol levels
- Regulates fluid balance and acts as a diuretic
- Supports optimal liver and gallbladder function
- Promotes good vision
In humans, taurine is produced from the metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids methionine and cysteine found in animal protein. Vitamin B6 is necessary for taurine conversion, so B6 deficiency can increase dietary taurine requirements. Since taurine is only found in animal protein, vegans may benefit from taurine supplementation.
Taurine can cross the blood-brain barrier and functions as an inhibitory (calming) neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. It can calm overstimulated nerve cells and protect them from glutamate, which can kill nerve cells under certain conditions.
Taurine aids magnesium transport within cells and helps with calcium absorption. Taurine levels may be too low when noradrenaline and adrenaline are elevated, such as during periods of high stress.
Taurine generally has a stabilizing function on cell membranes. The retina's photoreceptors require high taurine content to maintain their structure and function.
One of taurine's fundamental functions appears to be its ability to act as an osmoregulator—helping cells maintain optimal water and salt concentrations. This can be effective for fluid retention and edema.
Taurine moderates the flow of positive ions, particularly calcium, through cell membranes. This is especially important in heart muscle, where excessive calcium levels can cause serious damage. Taurine has a dual function: when calcium levels are low, taurine can increase calcium availability to heart muscle cells, enhancing the heart's contractile ability. Taurine can also protect heart muscle cells from the negative effects of excess calcium.
One of taurine's first identified functions was conjugation with bile acids to form bile salts. Bile salts emulsify dietary fats and make them more water-soluble to facilitate absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. Without adequate bile, fat is excreted in stool - a condition called steatorrhea. In the liver, taurine combines with bile salts, making cholesterol more soluble so it can be excreted in stool. This helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels.
Taurine also functions as an antioxidant by inhibiting LDL cholesterol oxidation.
Taurine can be found in certain energy drinks, but it's not an energy-boosting compound. It's not used in the body's energy production or as "muscle fuel."
